Exploring life experiences at home and beyond – Destination Happiness

465 things gone in 30 days!!

declutter (verb)
To simplify or get rid of mess, disorder, complications, etc:
I saw this challenge on a Facebook page, and as a tweet. I am a hoarder. I grew up believing throwing away things in good working order was wasteful. I didn’t however, learn the lesson of tossing one out to make room for another or that sometimes we have things we just do not need or want. I had a go decluttering my home slowly a while back. You can read about that effort here. But, old habits die hard and I still have clutter left- mountains of it…as well as new additions to my collection.
So, hold me accountable, follow my journey as I shift these mountains.

Day 1
Object – coffee maker

Acquired – a hand-me-down of an item I didn’t actually want. I love coffee but I particularly enjoy the experience of coffee. The experience is buying it, sipping it, reflecting AND having someone make it for me. I don’t mind driving out for a take away and as I only drink one a day now I don’t want to give up that luxury. Sure it’s dearer than a home brew but I don’t smoke , drink or even buy magazines so it’s a luxury I wish to keep.
Result – a large vacant spot in an otherwise cluttered kitchen cupboard
Tossed item Tally – 1

Things left to remove – 464

( I might have to get busy organising for the big number days)

Are you a hoarder( or do you live with one)? If not, any secrets or tips you can offer me ? PLEASE!!

Author: Travelling Macs

A mum to 2 grown up children who always make me proud, a wife and a full time school teacher. I love eating great food but am not motivated to cook. Love traveling around this great country in which I live. Often found traveling with my husband Brian. I write for pleasure and if it's read (and enjoyed) by others then that's a bonus! 2014 saw me begin the 'new' me. Working hard at leaving the fear of 'what if' behind and replacing it with YOLO adventures. :)

  1. So understand this post at the minute!
We’re decluttering so that we can sell up and move back inner to rent. Thankfully there’s a junk collection tomorrow as we’ve kust about filled the street with junk for the council to remove! It feels wonderful to rid our home of all the excess!
Totally understand the need to treat yourself to a single coffee each day. Keep it up!

    • That sounds like a big move you are making but would be so exciting! Best wishes as you find your new home. We are fortunate where we live that the council provides 6 free junk collections / garden refuse ( that you choose your own date for) on top of our regular garbage and recycle service . I have no excuse not to to dispose of my stuff …well no reason other than myself haha

  2. Twelve years ago, we a made cross country move where everything was going to be weighed and we were going to pay by the pound. That was an incentive to get rid of ‘things.’ Then we lived the first year with only our suitcases of clothes. So, when we finally moved for in and unpacked, I got rid of all kinds of things that I knew I could live without. Since then, I’m a frequent visitor to Goodwill and Salvation Army. If I buy something new, i get rid of the something old. I’m a minimalist ‘now’ and I love it. My daughter will thank me some day too. 🙂

    • That cost of move would certainly have made one really think what needed to travel with you!! At the moment my house is in disarray as we are having floorboards put through the bedrooms. Everything has to be moved out to the ( very tightly packed) garage. I am hoping to be frugal with what goes back into the now bare rooms when the floors go down next week…I hope :))) actually I like the idea of the goodwill stores. I will start boxing in the garage. Thanks

  3. I’m in the process of doing the same thing, spring house cleaning in the middle of winter. So far, all I’ve been able to get rid of are some small cookbooks and old greeting cards. I need to do better tomorrow. :/

  4. I so need to do this challenge, bravo for keeping up the Declutter lifestyle. Jackie 🙂

    • I lost count of items but in my bedroom alone we no longer have the old computer desk, dilapidated shoe racks belonging to my husband, an old tall mirror that had seen better days and a TV and stand. The room looks larger , neater and feels so much happier ( if that makes sense) for the declutter. Still evacuating more out of the garage 🙂 thanks got visiting my blog. Hope you visit again 🙂

I enjoy reading comments so don't forget to add one please :)
