Next Year…Maybe..

I have never been to the Melbourne Cup. Since  I was about 25 ( and that’s over 25 years ago) I have promised myself each year I will go but things seem to happen or I just don’t get organised ( more often this is the reason). So of course it’s still a ‘next year’ event for me.

I have been to races in Sydney.  The best part is the dressing up. It’s one occasion where I do buy something new with all the accessories and of course a fascinator to add to the glamour. I’m not a hat person so the fascinator is just right.

Coming in second place is betting on the horses. My race day has always been with my girlfriends. We sit in the Members stand, sip champagne and eat ‘lady food’. We are hard core punters. We open our purses and let out a $10 per race for the whole day each (that’s between all of us not individually haha). We choose our horses carefully…What’s the jockey wearing? Does the name have significance? Does the horse look pretty as it is paraded before the race? Yes, we obviously take our punting seriously.

Occasionally on a race we might splurge individually, if one horse takes our eye and it isn’t our turn to bet on a race. This is where we splurge and bet with a $5 of our own! We rub shoulders in the queue with those rolling hundreds (yes plural!!) of $100 and notes while we work hard to remember our “Horse number * Race * Name of Race track method to bet.

We watch the races and cheer loudly at the mention of our horse’s name, so you can only begin to imagine the squeals should we win. Actually beginners luck usually has us go ok in the first few races.

At work we usually have an afternoon tea and watch the Melbourne Cup race replayed .Some dress up with hats and fascinators – I’m one of those! Today I wore my miniature hat , a creation of my own , put together for another outing but not worn. While I had no luck in the horse sweep I had a great time with my work colleagues…and some tasty nibbles to add to it!

A mum to 2 grown up children who always make me proud, a wife and a full time school teacher. I love eating great food but am not motivated to cook. Love traveling around this great country in which I live. Often found traveling with my husband Brian. I write for pleasure and if it's read (and enjoyed) by others then that's a bonus! 2014 saw me begin the 'new' me. Working hard at leaving the fear of 'what if' behind and replacing it with YOLO adventures. :)

  1. As my mum would say – save your pennies and do it.

  2. Had a very quiet Malbourne Cup today but have special memories of our race days. I always went for the prettiest colours on the horse and jockey!!!

  3. Wow, I completely spaced on Melbourne Cup day this year. Working from home now, I don’t have the office culture of stopping to watch it, and I just worked on through!

    Maybe next year 🙂

  4. I’ve never done anything for Melbourne Cup, or any other cup for that matter! I usually forget about it as well.
Sounds like you guys have a lot of fun though. If I did do anything, I’d like to do it the way you do 🙂

I enjoy reading comments so don't forget to add one please :)
