Motivaton -warm up exercise

As I write I’m getting my motivation up to do a bit more decluttering of my home. I’m watching Extreme Clutter on television. I reason if they can do it, I can too with a smaller job. I have also read Lessons in Letting Go: Confessions of a Hoarder by Corinne Grant.
Using humour she provides some key ideas to help with the clearing process.

But what exactly is clutter vs sentiment? I am a sentimental person and tend to give ‘things’ a life. However, there’s only so many things one can keep in a limited space. I also have a bit of a problem with ” I might need it later”. That is the hard jump in decluttering.
Unfortunately both my husband and I are hoarders so there isn’t one person encouraging another….least not until lately.

I found decluttering the kitchen became easy once I accepted that while I always love to have any gadget available , I rarely use them. I was helped too, by the fact my school fete was happening so my junk became saleable goods for the school ( after all most had only been used once or twice !)

My husband isn’t yet so excited by the idea of decluttering his things but I think I can work on that! 😉

Ok show’s over, time to get busy. This time I think it will be my wardrobe. I left a few too many unwanted things in there last time.

Are you are hoarder or a declutterer? If you are good at decluttering please leave me some helpful tips to keep me motivated. 🙂

Author: Travelling Macs

A mum to 2 grown up children who always make me proud, a wife and a full time school teacher. I love eating great food but am not motivated to cook. Love traveling around this great country in which I live. Often found traveling with my husband Brian. I write for pleasure and if it's read (and enjoyed) by others then that's a bonus! 2014 saw me begin the 'new' me. Working hard at leaving the fear of 'what if' behind and replacing it with YOLO adventures. :)

  1. We are just on the verge of a huge declutter. Holly is moving out to a petite one bedroom apartment and retirement approaches. I have a plan of action and a few carrots to dangle. I’m going to read that book and then get on with it!

  2. Just make sure you buy the ebook not a paperback to add to the clutter lol. My wardrobe is looking mighty sad right now…so much spare rack room and drawers. Time to fill it up now haha. Coincidentally I’m off to Melbourne soon .

  3. I always buy ebooks 🙂

  4. I live with a declutterer. His catch phrase is ” I only came to this country with one suitcase”. If I did not keep on the move, I would have been thrown out years ago.
    🙂
Tip: When decluttering have a throw out pile/bag/box, a keep pile and a maybe/Salvos pile. Double check the last pile and then get rid of everything except the keep pile (straight away so you don’t change your mind).
It’s easy to do if you visualise you are dead, and someone else is going through your things. Look at your stuff through someone else’s eyes.
I have to admit, I keep things that are special to me for sentimental reasons. However, I have been liberated from grandma’s bedspreads, white linen sheets that survived WW1, anything silver except jewellery and hundreds of books, nic-nacs and pieces of Tupperware.

  5. I have no trouble in decluttering my wardrobe. I have a rule now, buy one – throw one out. The Garden Gnome (who would still be wearing clothes from his teenage years if they fitted him) doesn’t understand this.
I think because my craft and my reading are my outlets, is the reason I find them hard to let go of. But I will get there. 🙂

    • I remember as I discovered ebooks I amassed and have read so many . So I was excited that I could declutter these books from my ipad into a ‘cloud’ to make room for more without having to get rid if them. If only ‘clouds’ existed in our home. 🙂

I enjoy reading comments so don't forget to add one please :)
