The Shadow Year

I love to read before I go to sleep. Actually I love to read at any time but with a full time job, family and a house to run  this is often my only time. Books with pages to turn are no longer my source of content though. I’m now into e-books which I read on my iPad. I love that I can carry a full bookcase and its always at my fingertips wherever I go, be that bedside, on the lounge, in the sun or in my handbag. I never minded giving up the paper variety for the e-style. It’s the content I enjoy not the delivery. I can still be the director or the story, bring the characters and events to life in my head, painting the mind pictures based on my interpretation of the author’s words.

I have just finished reading The Shadow Year by Hannah Richell.

Photo taken from this site as well.

Not wanting to give spoilers, the story begins with 5 friends who have just finished university. They take up residence in an abandoned cottage and begin to make it their own. Living alone they develop a micro-society type existence, rattled later when the outside world enters unannounced. 30 years later a lady receives keys to the cottage anonymously. She begins to live in it and tries to work out the secrets it seems to be hiding.  My review is only to say I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book (don’t want to be too specific and give it all away). I was drawn in by  the way the changing seasons reflected the characters’ actions and feelings , how the enthusiasm and summer heat was later broken by the bleak winter with  despair growing in the characters.

Having enjoyed reading that book so much I have now found the author’s first book Secrets of the Tides and have begun reading it. Although I’m reading them out of chronological order it doesn’t matter. They are not related stories although they do both have woven intrigue and are told in the style of two time eras. Once again, my nights are extremely short as the attempts to put this book down always end up with a ‘just one more chapter’ before sleep.

What have you been reading lately?  Leave me some ideas for my next read please.

Author: Travelling Macs

A mum to 2 grown up children with young families of their own, who always make me proud. I'm a wife, grandmother, friend, sister, a recently retired teacher and a beginning ukulele player. I love eating great food but am becoming interested in cooking. Love traveling around this great country in which I live and worldwide more recently. Often found traveling with my husband Brian. I write for pleasure and if it's read (and enjoyed) by others then that's a bonus! 2014 saw me begin the 'new' me. Working hard at leaving the fear of 'what if' behind and replacing it with YOLO adventures. :)

  1. This book sounds very interesting, Is it available on iBooks? A book I read recently was A Good Wife. Quite unsettling but a good read.

  2. Sorry, it’s How To Be a Good Wife by Emma Chapman.

  3. Yes both of the ones I wrote of are iBooks. I must get the one you recommended 🙂

  4. I have added both of those books to my Wish List. I have been reading books by Roisin Meaney ( Robyn found the first one) and I am really enjoying them as a light easy read at bedtime! The first one I read was ‘Something in Common’. If you like Cathy Kelly you will like this one! Set in Ireland, so of course I enjoyed it!

I enjoy reading comments so don't forget to add one please :)
